CD Trip Report 3-7 August - Grumpies and Goggles

163039 heads along the Vltava river at Strekov with a service to Kolin. 07/08/2017
Thursday 3 Aug
242 234 at Brno Zidenice with a service to Tisnov - 03/08/2017
We started our trip with a vintage run to Stanstead airport on board 'premier' 317's in time to make our Ryanair flight at 13:50 to Brno. At departure time passengers were still disembarking from the flight however boarding was conducted without too much fuss. Being near the back of the queue I was in prime position to have my 'large carry on bag' checked into the hold- As taking the carry on bag is purely a cost saving exercise this was no problem at all except for one member of our party who checked his bag into the hold with his boarding card and passport still inside it! There was a minor faff while we resolved this and also the issue that I had booked extra legroom for myself (short) rather than the person in our group that actually wanted it (tall). Once airborne the pilot had the audacity to announce that our boarding had been intentionally delayed as we had been allocated a later runway take off slot- nothing to do with the fact that there were still passengers from the inbound flight on board then?
As ever landing at Brno was uneventful and we were quickly on the bus into the city. Checking into our hostel took a little longer than planned due to a slight overshoot on my part which resulted in us walking almost out of town completely- I was sure our accommodation wasn't that far out!

A Tatra KT8D5 tram pauses outside the main station. 03/08/17
Finally onto some trains and due to digging we headed straight to Brno Zidenice by tram. We saw a couple of loco movements and a freight while the non-FIP contingent of our group purchased his 5 day ticket (working out around a whopping £30!). Two of the group then headed off on 242 243 while the other 3 of us held back in the hope of some Laminatka action. Light descending and no Laminatkas in sight we then headed the opposite way with 242 217. This didn't seem to be in my diagrams and we were slightly surprised when the train terminated at Brno Modrice (we were only planning to go one stop further anyway). The loco came off and a very smart 242 260 backed on for the run back to Brno Zidenice. I thought all these locos were slowly going into blue/white but this one appeared freshly painted in red/cream. In fact most of the locos we saw were in the older/nicer scheme. We wasted some time back at Zidenice in the supermarket which made us quite late into the town centre for dinner. Had an awful Calzone before heading to the Brno beer festival which we had stumbled upon while looking for dinner. As it was very late there was only time for a pivo or two before we retreated back to our hostel shortly after midnight. We passed a few bars on the way and after a change of clothes accidentally ended up heading 'out out'. Oops.

Friday 4 Aug
749 265* pauses at Ruda nad Moravou with its portion working to Jesenik. 04/08/2017
Our first Goggle of the trip- 750 704 pauses at
Namest n. Oslavou. Our DMU back to Prague can be seen in
the adjacent platform. One of my fellow enthusiasts
bags can be seen on the near platform!
Slightly sorer heads than we had planned this morning but we did all wake up as booked. Not long after waking up the rain began. The plan was to do a few spins out of Brno before heading to Prague however the weather (it was really chucking down) left the idea of standing on stations somewhat less favourable. We grabbed some breakfast from the station and looked for a move- the 0920 to Plzen via Jihlava with 750 704 seemed a good bet. We took it a good 45 mins to the first shack of Namest nad Oslavou- unfortunately the train passes the return loco hauled set 5 minutes out leaving us on a DMU and hauled coach back to Brno.

Retro liveried 362 001 pauses on its way to Sumperk.
The cab view from 362 001.
We had quite a quick + 5 or so at Brno to pick up 362 001 (in its wacky old livery as ES499 1001) on the 11:18 to Sumperk/Jesenik. A few photos were taken on our way at station stops and we did also finally pass a Laminatka 230 051 at Vyskov na Morave. A vew stations later upon returning to the train from another 'photo stop' the driver beckoned two of us into the cab... this was misunderstood by persons number 3 and 4 and before we knew it the driver had 4 of us in the cab accompanying him for the next 30 mins or so!
Our return Goggle 750 707 at Ruda nad Moravou. 04/08/2017
It had stopped raining, but of course when we arrived at Zabreh for the train to split it had started again. We had come this way in the as we had gen that our portion on to Jesenik would be worked forward by 749 265* and sure enough the grumpy was waiting in the headshunt to back onto our half of the train. Of course I wish it had been loud but it was nice to get a grumpy I wasn't planning to see, and a new livery for me as well. We took this to Ruda nad Moravou for a +20 or so into 750 717 back to Zabreh (not raining this time). A grumpy and two goggles down and we hadn't made it to Prague yet!
ZSSK 350 006 at Parbudice with a train to Prague. 04/08/2017

Our star sighting at Pardubice, AWT Goggles 753 009 and
753 739 with a train of oil tanks. 04/08/2017
ZSSK 350 006 took us on to Pardubice- perhaps there wasn't time to have pancakes in the restaurant car but the temptation was too much! The sun had now come out and we spent a pleasant 40 minutes or so the highlight of which was AWT Goggles 753 009 and 753 739 on tanks. Our next move was to pick up PKP EP09-033 into Prague, check into our apartment and head to Praha Liben before the sunshine which had finally arrived gave way to night.
Several Polish EP09's make it to Prague, we were brought in by EP09-033.

Had we got to Liben an hour earlier we might have got some really nice shots, as it happens we saw a few freights before the sunlight faded. As we were leaving the station one of the elderly class 451 EMU's pulled in- out of the bushes appeared a group of about 5 youths, most with spray paint, one with camera and tripod who proceeded to start re-liverying the train! An impressive operation but not really what you want to see. We headed back to the main station and met up with our other British contingents James and Ian for dinner in one of the 'Railway' pubs. It was great to have our pivo's delivered by train but aside from that the food and service was a little underwhelming. Most of our group had not been to Prague before so we walked off dinner around the old town... before we knew it the time was gone 01:00 again.

Saturday 5th Aug
740 692 pauses at Praha Vrsovice with it's train to Cercany. 05/08/2017
After another late night not all of the group fancied the early start for the desperate leap to Praha Vrsovice on the 07:39 KZD special to Cercany. We knew this train had produced a 740 on some occasions but the gen was that it was most likely to be a heritage DMU. It turned out that our walking route to the station was longer than we thought with a run being required for the last bit. As it happened we needn't have excerted ourselves as the stock was not at the station. Thankfully the effort paid off with 740 692 rolling in on two trailers. An excellent train and the run to Vrsovice was really far too short- beers were already being poured but there wasn't time to buy tickets- a 100Kn note was left for the 3 of us, an overpayment I'm sure but still not bad value.
749 121 has to be the best looking 'Grumpy' currently running. Sadly this is
all I saw of it on this trip parked at Praha Vrsovice. 05/08/2017.
Our move back to the main station was set to be another desperate leap with 749 121 which was due to work the CD special to Turnov. On arrival at Vrosovice was 749 121 resplendant in the sunshine, but shut down, and no stock. Clearly the Turnov wasn't going to be starting on time and we needed to be back at the main station for the KZC Grumpy turn to Rakovnic. We had a bit of time to play with but not enough to wait for the Turnov- alternative traction would be required so we took the next hauled train back to Hl.N with 362 083. T478 2065 (749259) bucked the trend of late 'crank' trains being ready in the platform for the 08:42 run up to Rakovnic. The two of our party who hadn't got up for the 740 cut it a little fine and were still running down the platform as the Grumpy tooted it's horn for departure. Of course they made it just (somehow they always do!), they certainly would have regretted missing it when they had heard the departure if they had not!
749 259 on the turn to Rakovnic departs from Beorun to head onto the diesel branch. 05/08/2017

CD Cargo 742 069 and 742126 in the yard at Beorun.
It was a pretty good run to Beorun where we had to disembark to continue with our plan for the day. I'd have loved to continue right up to Rakovnic but with the diesel back in to Masarykovo unavailable due to digging there wasn't much of a move back to Prague- anyway- we had other targets in sight. After bothering a pair of 742's in the yard at Beorun it was back to Prague with 362 086. There was just time to pick up 754 031 on the 10:55 Cercany and make our way back to the main station behind 350 006 (which quickly transpired to be an ECS movement!) and then off to Tabor on a wedged service to Ceske Budovice behind 362 127. With absolutely no seats in standard we elected to fill a 1st class compo. The formidable gripper wasn't impressed but eventually got the idea after some waving of money that we were quite happy to buy a 1st class ticket. It was a good move costing us next to nothing each for seats and comfort! We had quite a tight connection at Tabor for the train to Bechyne. Or at least it should have been. The previous arrival was showing on the board as being around 80 late, and it turned out the next run from Tabor was to be a bus... not the booked heritage electric, which had apparently failed. This presented a problem. We had no intention of covering the bus and doing the later run would not allow us to cover the next part of our move, the 720 'cycle ex' on its return from Pisek

720 097 at shunts at Tabor having completed it's days work.
The choice in the end was quite simple- we abandoned the run to Behcyne and headed straight onto the DMU up to Pisek to cover the 720 in its entirety rather than another leap at the Tabor end. I'll confess I wasn't convinced in advance by the 720, which I saw as something of a 'glorified shunter'- but the ancient (1920's) balcony stock and the scenic line certainly made it worthwhile. We had a little concern at Pisek when the redcap stopped us taking photos from the platform- but turns out this was only to get us out of the way of a departing train afterwhich we were welcomed back to wander over the track! A few minutes before departure from Pisek I decided that what we really needed were ice creams. A quick look around the station revealed no ice cream establishment- but there was a Tesco just across the road. 5 minutes until departure- is that time to run to Tesco and get ice cream? Yes- it is apparently. But only just- thanks to the guy who let me in front of him in the queue as well. Ice cream in hand it was an enjoyable run back to Tabor on the wooden coaches standing on the balcony behind 720 097. There is a particularly impressive viaduct over the Vltava river to look out for as well- all in all a top little journey.

113 002 waits dormant for its next run to Bechyne. 05/08/17
Back at Tabor 113002 had replaced the heritage electric on the Bechyne route- much as it was tempting to go for a ride we had to get back to Prague for our pre-planned night out. There was one more move on the cards before hitting the bar, and that was to drop back at Prague Vrsovice to pick up 749264* on it's final run of the day into Prague Hl.n. The train was got progressively later but was a good chance to pick up another unexpected grumpy- another new livery for me as well. With an hour to spare we had 5 people to get through the bathroom, an ironing board and a KFC to head out to town...

749264* departs empty from Praha Hl.N having worked in from Cercany vice Goggle. 05/08/2017

Sunday 6th August

742 216 in the yard at Kolin. 06/08/2017
We definitely didn't make it up for the 09:22 Prague to Cercany with 749 121. I headed off on my own to 'rescue' the day shortly before midday heading out to Kolin with 151 007 on the 12:22 to Zilina. The portion of this train which was continuing across the border was wedged however towards the back of the train was plenty of space and some fresh air coaches. I had almost an hour to spare at Kolin during which time several freights were seen including some of the old Skodas.

In one of the last patches of sun before it disappeared for the day 130 025 takes car carriers through Kolin. 06/08/2017.

There is something about a green Skoda- 122 036, Kolin.
It was then onto another small DMU for the run down to Zruc nad Szavouz. One of the main targets of this trip was 749107 which I had flagged in error on my previous trip to Prague. The gen I had was that it was the loco outbased at Cercany and I had therefore worked out that it should work the afternoon 14:59 train from Zruc to Prague as far as Cercany. While on my way I got some info from a friend that there was digging on the line and the first part of the journey was by bus.
It was with a mixed reaction therefore that I turned up at Zruc to find 742 042 standing with stock with the train, re timed to leave at 15:20. So I had my train and no bus... but I didn't have my Grumpy. The run was pleasant if uneventful and I was joined by the rest of my group on Cercany who had spent the afternoon with 749 121 on it's booked turn. The logo on Sp1832 is booked to swap at Cercany and 749107 had appeared on shed. Would I get it after all? No, the Goggle ran around and continued with the train back to Prague.
754 042 waits to pass another train at Sazava Sp1832 15:20
Zruc nad Szavou - Praha Hl.N. 06/08/2017
On investigation later I realised what must have happened, 749107 had clearly worked the 'other' train from Zruc, the 13:41 train from Svetla nad Szavous which I hadn't even realised worked through Zruc from the diagrams. I must have just missed it at Zruc as well! Oh well- you live and learn, and clearly shouldn't plan your moves in 10 minutes before going on a pub crawl the night before!
There was one final move before dinner, to pick up 754 007 on the inbound turn from Tanvald. A DMU was taken out to Prague Cakovice in order to pick up R1149 15:51 Tanvald - Prague Vrsovice- 754 007 providing about the best noise I have ever heard from a Goggle- and it still wasn't much!
R1149 15:51 Tanvald - Praha Vrsovice waits time at Praha Hl.N.
This train had produced 749 107 on my previous visit. 06/08/17

Monday 7th August
Trams in Prague, 2210 dating from 1932 is in 'Heritage' service, while the
Tatra T3 is one of the hundreds in regular service in the city.
This morning it was time to explore a bit of the city and catch some of the lovely Tatra T3 trams in action. We were also lucky to catch heritage tram 2210 dating from 1932. Our adventures in the city done it was time to check out of our accommodation and head back to the station and onto the 12:48 to Cheb which we would take to Usi nad Labem. Traction for this train was not what we were expecting with Vectron 193 270 working the train as far as Usti nad Labem. We were here for photos and embarked on the roughly 40 minute walk along the river to Strekov. We didn't have long and the traffic levels were disappointing. In around 90 minutes we only saw one southbound train (though several more did pass northbound). Clearly this is a location one needs to invest some more time in and I am sure that I will be back. Our return to Prage was behind 150 224.

750 707 waits for departure with the 17:05 Praha Bobny - Raknovice. 07/08/2017

Stunning light catches 854 029 at Praha Vrsovice. 05/08/2017
I had once again failed to ride a 714 on this trip. 714 202 sits temptingly in
the sun at Praha Bobny waiting for its next duty. 07/08/2017
It was now time to start thinking about heading back to the airport but there was a final chance for a diesel. With digging on the viaduct from Masarykovo the evening diesels are currently leaving form Praha Bobny (near Vltavska Metro station) where an additional temporary platform has been constructed. We were hoping to pick up a 714 but the timings didn't work. 750 707 was sitting waiting for the 17:05 to Raknovice whereas there was no indication of when 714 202 further up the station may leave. I tried to ask the station shunter about the 714 and he indicated that it was not the next train. 750717 therefore became the last diesel of the trip on this surprisingly run down and neglected route around the suburbs of Prague. The 191 airport bus continues from Prague Veleslavin. Our flight home was at 19:50 with Wizz to Luton. We had maybe cut things a bit fine to head to security at the gate but thankfully everyone made it through and we were homeward bound.

Conclusions
754 031 departs Praha Vrsovice with the 10:55 Praha - Cercany. 05/08/2017
A really enjoyable trip with a good group of friends- though it has to be said the larger the group the more difficult it is to get everyone through the bathroom and out of the door! It is good to see a reasonable amount of Grumpy action still up for grabs in the Summer from Prague as I hadn't honestly expected to get another ride with these locos following my trip in 2014. It was frustrating to miss 749107 again, especially once I realised back home what it had actually worked! It was also a little disappointing to only get one run with a 'loud' machine- but then that is partly my error for failing to get up for 749121 on Sunday morning. There is plenty still to do in this wonderful country and I am already looking to see when I can arrange another trip. Thanks to Jon, James, Rhys and Matt for the company and various contributions to the planning and realisation of this trip- it was a good one!

Unfortunately going the 'wrong' way 130 023 skirts the Vltava at Strekov- a loco I saw in green on my previous visit. 07/08/2017

Class 707 enters passenger service

707005 arrives into Syon Lane with the very first passenger class 707 run, the 09:28 additional from Brentford to Reading.
707005 and 707003 pause at Ascot.

Somewhat later than the planned date in April, South West Trains class 707 'Desiro City' EMU's finally entered passenger service on 17th August with just three days left to run on the franchise. 707003 and 707005 were the first units to be accepted into traffic by SWT from Siemens and this pair worked a number of special trips on 17th August beginning with a 1Z31 09:28 Brentford - Reading which was the units debut into passenger service. The train worked several more trips during the day, the majority being on the route from Staines to Reading.
How busy is this train? Not very- the first run did however pick up a number of passengers at Ascot and Wokingham. The interior of the trains is similar in style to the class 700 operating on Thameslink. The South West Trains units feature a mix of 2+1 and 2+2 seating with plug sockets and WiFi throughout. Toilets are not fitted though provision is made that these could be installed at a later date if required.
This may be the only occasion of a South West Trains branded
class 707 in service as the units are not scheduled to operate
again before the franchise change on 20th August.
In total 30 class 707 units were ordered for metro and suburban work by South West Trains. Controversially the new franchise holder, First/MTR which will brand the network as 'South Western Railway' from Sunday 20th August announced that the 30 brand new trains would not play a part in their plans. The class 707's will continue to be accepted into service as part of existing plans to extent suburban trains from 8 to 10 coaches and will run until delivery of a new fleet of Derby built Bombadier 'Aventra' trains is delivered to South Western Railway, likely to be in 2020.

Trip Report - SNCF - DB - SNCB Circle

The view of Cherbourg from the Musee de la Liberation. The railway is prominent and the course of the former route to the Gare Maritime can easily be picked out. In the station BB26012 waits for the 12:54 to Paris St Lazare
Day 1.
BB15045 has arrived with at Cherbourg with a
push-pull set from Paris. 23/07/2017
A very hastily planned trip due to having a few days off work and not having escaped from the country since February. More to the point I had not set foot in Europe during 2017 and things were getting desperate. Planning for the trip was, at best poor and escaping the UK was going to be difficult without major expenditure given the start of the school holidays. While out with friends on the Friday night I found myself calling P&O to discover that their Dover-Calais route was fully booked until early evening (even for foot passengers)- not good for getting to Paris, therefore early Saturday morning I found myself booking onto the 15:15 Portsmouth-Cherbourg ferry. That left me a few hours to pack, and get the train down to Portsmouth. I had checked the weather for the weekend and helpfully that symbol of a cloud with the sun sticking out of the top and a lightening bolt from the bottom prevailed. By Portsmouth the heavy rain had arrived. The walk from Portsmouth & Southsea station is slightly quicker and a *little* more pleasant than that from Dover Priory to the ferry terminal. The terminal for the cross channel ferries is certainly a lot nicer than Dover. After the worlds shortest bus ride (about 200m) from the terminal to the boat I was soon setting sail, slightly late, on board the 'Normandie Express' fast ferry to Cherbourg. Weather was changeable with some great views of the Isle of Wight and also some heavy downpours. One child on board spent a good half an hour screaming it's head off but aside from this the sailing was uneventful if a bit choppy at times. Due to poor weather we were late into Cherbourg but it didn't really matter. There is no train to meet the ferry. The ferry docks quite close to the old town but one is then bussed to the terminal building which is about as far as the town in the opposite direction. Once there there is a free shuttle bus to the 'town centre' which meets the boat. I took this as it was raining- the description of 'town centre' is perhaps a little unfair as the bus drops you on a road junction on the other side of the ferry port, a stones throw from where the boat docks in the first place.
It was raining again as I arrived at the Hotel Ambassadeur with a room overlooking the old harbour. Cherbourg was surprisingly pleasant and I enjoyed a good meal before bed.

Day 2
The big surprise of the day- and once a common sight- BB17068 arrives at
Paris St Lazare. I would take this train on the 16:57 towards Pontoise.
Woke up to find that it wasn't raining which is always a positive. There was no rush to get out today as my train wasn't until 12:53. Explored Cherbourg a little more including climbing up to the Musee de la Liberation which is quite a climb with luggage! The view however is worthwhile. I also had a wander around the former Gare Maritime building (now a museum - Cite de Mer). Ghost Sybic 26012 was provided for the 12:54 to Paris St Lazare, a route I had not traveled before and of course comfortable with a fine set of Corails. For now this line is still a sure bet for loco-haulage and plenty more sets were seen stabled at Caen. Arrival into Paris was a couple of minutes early. I had a little bit of time to kill before making my way to Paris Est for the 18:12 to Culmont-Chalindrey so hoped to pick up a BB27300 or two. There seemed to be a distinct lack of the locos in the station and the only one I could find was first stop Argenteuil so I flagged that as I thought it was a bit tight on time- a strangely sensible thought for a change. Just as I was contemplating how best to spent my hour in Paris I looked towards the platforms and to my utter surprise BB17068 was pulling in- While these were commonplace only a year ago I thought they had now lost virtually all of their work form St Lazare (and everywhere else for that matter)- certainly I didn't expect to see one on a Sunday. Not only was this possibly my chance to have a ride on one of SNCF's small electrics- it was also required. Obviously it had to be done even though the 16:57's first stop was Argenteuil... so much for being sensible! Of coures it isn't quite the same riding these on VB2N stock as it was on the RIO's but that isn't a choice anymore. On the return BB27367 was taken back to St Lazare before a quick dash over to Paris Est on the RER.
This was the first big test of my quickly hashed together itinerary. The only booked working for a CC72100 these days on a Sunday is the 18:12 to Culmont-Chalindrey. If it wasn't hauled there was no point trying to get into Germany through Belfort. 20 mins before the train was due to leave there was no sign of any stock, only the ominous presence of one of the Alsthom Coradia units which have now taken over almost all Line 4 workings. With no platform allocation I sought out the only loco hauled train in the station with BB15001 and BB15050 in platform 1. I came back to the coucourse to find the 18:12 allocated to platform 9. I hadn't seen any stock arrive and I could swear that was where the Coradia was... It wasn't going to happen was it. Just I was thinking what on earth plan B might be the broken nose of a BB15000 came into view next to the Coradia... could it be? Yes- it was! From somewhere some stock had arrived and the nasty Coradia was actually on platform 10. That was a relief- but left me just 10 mins to grab photos (in appalling light) some food, and try to use the station WiFi to book a room in Belfort! I managed the first two. Required CC72190 was the power that I would take through to Chaumont, the heart scraped into the dirt on the locomotive appropriately displaying the enthusiasts affection for these locos in their dying days.
Photography under the trainshed at Troyes is never easy and the rubbish weather didn't help either! CC72190 pauses with the 18:12 Paris Est - Culmont Chalindrey, the only booked working on a Sunday and likely my farewell to this classic class of locomotive which I first met in Paris back in 2011.
The new order, an Alstom Coradia unit at Vesoul.
Away from Paris Est on time it was sad to pass Pantin looking out for the big diesels (and CC72084 of course) stabled there to only see Coradias. At Nangis we passed a set of stock which had clearly been there some time- I can only presume since CC72141 hit a car here back in 2015? Sad again to see such a low value placed on the Corail stock that it can simply be abandoned. We also slowed down in this area causing a delay of a few minutes which the train would never make up. Chaumont came around all too quickly and it was time to say goodbye to 72190, after possibly my last big diesel ride in France. 10 minutes behind was the 18:42 ex-Paris which would continue my journey to Belfort. My first taste of the Intercities Coradia's, and I have to admit, aside from it being a unit it wasn't bad at all. I can't see myself coming back to this line once the loco's finish but I'm sure the 'normal' passengers will appreciated these new trains which are comfortable and modern- and a vast improvement over an AGC at least. Accommodation for the night ended up being the Hotel Kyriad which owing to mobile internet not working on my phone was booked by my Dad over the phone from the UK! The hotel was reasonable and largely refurbished, however my corridor still resembled a building site, the room itself was ok if spartan.

Day 3.
A 'Carvelle' shows off the SNCF heritage scene at Mulhouse.
Woke to rain again in Belfort. My decision to pay for the hotel breakfast proved to be a good one and the raincoat was on again for the walk back to the station. I was sure my train to Mulhouse would be a unit, but as I was walking to the station BB22354 arrived into the station. This turned out to be the train for Lyon while my train to Mulhouse was an AGC. I had a quick connection at Mulhouse during which preserved 'Carvelle' X4395 was photographed- complete with notices asking people not to vandalise it- I'm not sure that is how it is supposed to work!? It was nice to be on a 'proper' train again on to Strasbourg with BB26141 providing the power, the weather improved during the run as well.

The weather has brightened up considerably by the time I chance from SNCF to DB at Wissembourg. DB 'Talent' Unit 643 007 will take me across the border and on to Neustadt. 24/07/2017.

I was hoping I might see a few of the commuter push pull turns at Strasbourg and looked up some old diagrams. Nothing booked on the BB67400 front though there were a few turns with BB25000 that could have produced depending what work these locos had left. I was to be disappointed as no locos were seen between Selestat and Strasbourg and there was no sign of any push-pull activity at Strasbourg either. A couple of BB25000 were parked up by the workshop and a line of BB67400 were further back. No sign of any RRR sets at all that I could see. BB26150 was seen sporting 'Grand Est' another non-livery in my opinion but a new one on me (swap the couloured bits of 'Vermillion' for blue).

Back behind locos after an interlude of multiple units. 146001
is the power from Mannheim to Frakfurt Main 24/07/2017.
I deviated from my planned route into Germany and rather than heading for an ICE from Offenburg elected to take local trains via Wissembourg. A Regiolis completing the French side and a Talent unit into Germany. I tried to buy a German FIP ticket from the SNCF window but was told to use the machine- opting for the Bahn card 50 option didn't go down wonderfully with one conductor who just said 'bahn card' to me several times before accepting the FIP, the other conductor was happy no questions asked. The route up to Frankfurt continued via Neustadt and then a suburban train on to Mannheim. There were a couple of options on to Frankfurt from here but as the first one was a rake of Dostsos with 146001 I chose that option via Darmstadt.

'Thunderbunnies' at Frankfurt- 218836 and 218813 await their next rescue call.

Frankfurt is always a hive of activity, though there has been a reduction of RE locos since I was last here. The plan was to have a quick spin on a 111 and/or 143. This didn't go well. Two sets of N-Wagons appeared with 111's that would have been suitable, but by the time I got to the front of the queue to get my FIP ticket from the DB ticket office they had already gone (allow a good 15 mins for a visit to a DB ticket office). I cut my losses, got a Bratwerst and continued on my next leg towards Koblenz.

Plenty of RE loco hauled action still appears at Frankfurt.

I was aware that locos had disappeared from local trains on the Rhein Valley and my train was some variation of Stadtler Flirt. I must say despite the lack of a loco the train was very comfortable and pleasant. There was even a guy pushing a food trolley around, presumably legitimately as he was wearing no trace of uniform of DB identification that I could see. The DB staff travelling on the train got a free coffee though so it must have been fine. I didn't see him serve anybody else!

Shortly after arrival at Cologne 111 129 appears with an RE to
Siegen from Aachen. 24/07/2017.

I was hoping to get off at Oberwesel to spend a few hours photographing in the Rhein Valley but a few mintues before our arrival we entered a tremendous thunderstorm to the extent that the other side of the river could hardly be seen. I stayed on to Boppard where the weather had cleared a little- this is a lovely area and I am sure to be back. Another Flirt on to Koblenz and while there were hauled RE options from here the lure of an OBB compartment proved too much as 101056 pulled in with a EuroCity. The sun was out now so I spent an hour or so on the station before heading off to my hotel in town, the Casa Visa (excellent if you like an orange bathroom) and then found a spot by the river for dinner. I had a night photo session planned at the station but the trains didn't play ball and I was told not to use my tripod during my first shot- clearly the biggest issue on a Monday night when there are drunks and screaming kids running around the station.
A stunning view over Boppard with a northbound IC heading along the banks of the Rhine before it rained again. I shall be back!
Day 4.
Belgian 2829 appears through the gloom at Koln West with a freight. There is
a good variety of activity here and the weather did improve slightly 25/07/2017
Surprise Surprise- raining again. A good (free) breakfast at the hotel where I got the impression there were only about 3 guests. Waked over to Koln West for some freight action- around 10 trains were seen in around 80 minutes with a fair selection of traction. It was then time to try spinning some locos out of Cologne taking a 146266 down to Bruhl and 146268 back to Koln Hbf. This batch of Traxx locos are quite musical- though not quite as good as a singing Taurus!

IC, ICE and RE trains at Koln Hbf 25/07/2017.

It was time for the final days travelling to begin now and finally a ride with a 111, traction to Aachen being 111129. A few more locos were seen at Aachen before I boarded my SNCB unit across the border to Welkenraedt. Back on a proper train from here with 1861 and 1805 taking me on to Brusseles Nord. I eventually had to change carriages as another small child was making a repeated unpleasant noise in the front one which I could only stand for so long! I was running ahead of schedule so had time here to pick up another loco into Brusselles Zuid/Midi- but with so many platforms finding what you want and making it on board proved difficult. What I wanted was a class 27 or 21 on the 'fresh air' coaches. I eventually settled for 2863 on an InterCity Direct.
DB gives way to SNCB on my journey at Aachen where 111 118 waits to work back to Hamm.

I had ridden the local train from Aachen into Belgium once
before- when an ICE had failed and terminated- the entire train
full of passengers had been transferred to the 2 car unit. The
type of EMU may now have changed but 2 cars is still (usually)
sufficient for this journey.
The big question of the day was whether I would manage to secure my FIP Eurostar ticket back home- it was a bit of a risk but paid off with space being available on the 19:52 train as I had hoped. This left me a couple of hours to try again at spinning some of the older electrics. Again this is difficult on normal tickets if you have not done your research and don't know what goes where (as was my case). Even less helpful is that my InterRail app seemed to be showing the stations in French, whereas the station was advertising them in Flemish, the destinations often being totally different. Once I eventually found the booking office at Midi I got a ticket to Mechelen.

1874 arrives at Welkenraedt with the train to Oostend which would convey me as far as Brussels. Despite their power many Belgian trains have multiple 'Vectron' locos in their consist- this one had another on the rear. 25/07/2017.

Belgian 'Goggles'? EMU 912 at Mechelen.
Now I just needed to find an appropriate train going there. 2153 was my chosen train from Midi to Nord but I couldn't work out whether or not that went on to Mechelen or not. Infact I could not work out where it was going at all with my multi-lingual issue! I took the safe option and bailed off at Nord. 1893 and 1856 took me on to Mechelen where I would hope for some more turquoise action on the return. Mechelen station has some charm but does also illustrate how neglected and run down most Belgain stations appear to be. Certainly compared to the spotless, modern and well maintained stations of France and Germany. I have always considered Brusseles Midi to be a bit of a dump, but actually compared to many other SNCB stations it is probably actually one of the better. At Mechelen there seemed to be plenty of loco hauled trains heading away from Brussels but everything heading in the direction I was after was producing units. Eventually after over 45 minutes I was finally rewarded with 2722 back to Midi.
Following the disaster that was the attempted introduction of High Speed 'Fyra' units on the Brusseles - Amsterdam service conventional NS loco hauled stock is now once again used and powered by hired in class 186 Traxx locos. 2863 pauses at Mechelen with a service to Breda (engineering works in the Netherlands curtailing the train).
2722 rolls into Mechelen with a service to Brussels. 25/07/2017.

Now all that remained was to board my Eurostar (3001/2) and finally head home after a crazy few days and completing over 1,300 miles. I upset the security people on the Eurostar platforms by standing at the front of the train to take some photos (I may not see another 'original' Eurostar here?)- I don't think the photos were a problem but apparently standing at the front sets off an 'alarm'. What should have been more of a concern was that the reservations on the set were all reversed with coach 18 where coach 1 should have been. This didn't help boarding and we left a few minutes late with plenty of people in the wrong seats. This wasn't a huge issue until Lille Europe where the correct incumbents of those seats then turned up. Leaving 15 minutes late from Lille made this the latest train I had been on all trip and missed us our slot through the tunnel securing an almost 20 minute late arrival in London. I find it amazing that the last Eurostar from Brussels to London is as early as 19:52 (21:03 arrival) though it does have the useful advantage of making sure I get home at a reasonable hour!
A sight I might not see again? Original 'Three Capitals' Eurostar set 3002 prepares to depart Brussels Midi with the 19:52 to London St Pancras. 25/07/2017
